FAQs

What is a life coach?

In short, a life coach holds you accountable to your goals for personal and professional success. At Pointerway we guide you to articulate your aspirations, clarify the choices before you, and create action plans for achievement. You set the agenda and our team of experts point the way, with tailor-made workshops and homework. Our coaches are objective sounding boards, helping you keep focused and on track, breaking through old barriers and developing new practices.

Do I need a life coach?

Most successful people have support to help them deepen their understanding of themselves and achieve their goals. Coaching is an investment in yourself and your success. It’s not just the rich and famous who have life coaches today! We work with men in all walks of life on either a continuing basis to improve all elements of their lives, or over a short-term to focus on a particular event or situation.

Isn’t coaching just another word for therapy?

Therapists are licensed and regulated, while coaches are not but, just like when choosing your therapist, you must choose carefully who you work with to ensure they fit your needs and that you trust them. We do partner with a Chicago-based counselling organization specializing in LGBTQ+ people and can refer you to an appropriate therapist during our work together. While coaching is unregulated, Pointerway has its own Code of Ethics 🗗 that all of our staff and partners must follow. Most of our clients use our coaching programs to support them in person, in real life situations, and follow up with their therapists to unpack any broader historical issues that may arise.

Do you accept health insurance?

We do not, and this is a policy within the coaching profession. To be able to use health insurance you have to be given a diagnosis of a specific illness or disorder. And most people are not sick! Instead, they’re experiencing perfectly normal responses to the frustrations of a stressful world. Coaches do not have medical training or licensing to make diagnoses and we will refer you to clinicians who do. Coaching may be considered tax deductible depending on your circumstances and many employers subsidize fees as part of their employee development programs.
